New US diplomatic cables leaked by WikiLeaks reveal how the US government harboured double standards over Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
The latest cable details how American diplomats tried to balance their distaste for Narendra Modi's allegedly poor human rights record against his imminent rise to prominence in national politics.
In the cable dated 2 November 2006, a US diplomat says, "If we waited to engage Modi after he attains national stature within India, many in the BJP would likely view this as an opportunistic move".
The US had only the year before revoked Narendra Modi's business and tourist visas citing his alleged role in the 2002 state-wide riots.
The cable goes on to detail how Modi had risen to prominence within the BJP and his success at attracting business attention to Gujarat.
Just days after that previous leaked cable was written, the US Consulate General in Mumbai met Narendra Modi in person in his office. He described the encounter in another cable to the State department. In it he says a visibly annoyed Narendra Modi told him that the events of 2002 were an internal Gujarati matter and the US had no right to interfere.
Meanwhile congress has responded saying that the country in question is a soveriegn nation so it won't be proper to comment.
