WikiLeaks expose India-Iran relations
Mon Mar 21 2011 03 : 03 / New Delhi
More proof of US interests dominating India's foreign policy. New WikiLeaks cable suggest India's relationship with Iran was more for show than real.

There were more shocking revelations today from the US embassy cables released by Wikileaks.

In the latest cables published by the Hindu, a senior foreign ministry official notified a diplomat at the US Embassy in Delhi about Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s visit in April 2008.

The MEA staffer reportedly told the US diplomat that she was providing the Embassy with this information even before the MEA informed other Indian government agencies.

Another cable from the US embassy in Delhi also seems to make inferences about Delhi's policy over Iran.

A US diplomat writes back to Washington about what he feels is the Government of India's broader game plan. He says the attempts to please Iran may be a gesture to the Left and Muslim voters. He goes on to write, "India's being cautious before going ever so slightly forward with the civil-nuclear agreement on cards with the US."

Previous instances – India bends backwards

The WikiLeaks cables have revealed several previous instances of India bending backwards to accommodate Washington, even compromising its own foreign policy.

In January 2008, the then Petroleum Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar was dropped allegedly because of his an anti-American stance.  He was replaced by the Pro-American Murli Deora.

Then, in September 2005 and in 2006, the US allegedly coerced India's votes at the IAEA against Iran's nuclear program.
