Brokers said lower than expected quarterly earnings of Telecom major Bharti Airtel weighed down the trading sentiment.

The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex fell by almost 43 points in the opening trade on Wednesday, largely on profit-booking.

The 30-share barometer, which had gained 80.10 points during Tuesday's volatile session, was quoting at 20,889.03 points in the opening trade, down by 42.85 points or 0.20 percent from Tuesday's close.

Similarly, the wide-based National stock Exchange index Nifty also fell by 19.05 points, or 0.22 percent to 6,282.50.

Bharti's consolidated net profit dipped by 26.53 percent to Rs 1,661.2 crore for the September quarter, from Rs 2,263 crore in the same quarter last fiscal. The company scrip was trading at Rs 332.30, down by 0.69 percent from the opening price of Rs 345.70.

Losses in financial sector, metals, IT, and capital goods sector stocks also dragged the Sensex down.

However, auto major Tata Motors bucked the trend and climbed over 6 percent to Rs 1,347 after the company posted a 102-fold jump in its consolidated net profits for the second quarter ended September 30.
