What to Expect: Wallstreet: Money Never Sleeps is a sequel that has come out 23 years after its original. The film is an American drama by director Oliver Stone who is better known for his blockbuster films like Platoon, Natural Born Killers, JFK and ofcourse the original Wallstreet. What you can expect from this film, well lots of boardroom meetings, stock market action, tid bits of romance and fatherly affection, an enamoring Shia LeBouf and a compelling Michael Douglas.

Plot: Gekko played by Michael Douglas is released from prison after eight years on account of illegal dealings and insider trading. A lot has changed from the time he went in. Jacob played by Shia LeBouf is a young wall street trader who is trying to make a name and a fortune for himself. He is also dating Gekko’s half daughter, who despises her father. After Jacob falls out with his mentor, he seeks a new confidante in Gekko and then begins the filthy money game in the world of bulls and bears.

Positives: It is interesting to see the way director Oliver Stone shows passage of time. It isn’t only through Douglas’ grey hair but his large, chunky obsolete cell phone that reminds us of how much time has passed since we used those leviathan instruments to make and receive calls. Nothing can question the speed of the film or its ability to keep us happily engaged. We like the camerawork and the quick cuts and edits. The film is able to highlight the filth, machinations and shadiness of the stockmarket with elan. The performances in the film are worth acknowledging. Shia Le Bouf, Michael Douglas and Susan Sarandon play dole out some great performances.

Negatives: The film doesn’t have a consistent plot. Unlike its predecessor which almost completely revolved revolved around the takeover of an airline, Wallstreet: Money Never Sleeps  is more generic and generally revolves around the economic meltdown than anything specific. Also, we would have preferred this film to be completely about business. The fact that there are too many emotions involved along with vignettes of romance, is a bit of a spoiler and dampener. We don’t like the fact that this film is softer and that Douglas has been sidelined to a great degree and goes missing for chunks at a stretch.
