The director, who is known for making movies based on contemporary socio-political issues, fought and lost election to the Lok Sabha from his native Champaran in 2004. He again lost election to the Lok Sabha in 2009 as Lok Janashakti Party candidate from West Champaran.
Asked whether he has plans to contest again during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Jha said he is done with electoral politics.

"It is not the reservation only that I am talking about in this movie. It is also about the commercialisation of education that is closely related to reservation. It took me four years to understand the social context of the issue and develop it into a narrative," Jha said.
