From a man who has made classic films like Seven and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, it is no surprise that The Social Network is a hard hitting, engaging, and such a close-to-life film. Out of the Seven Sins, The Social Network drips envy from its pivot and captures how life takes a full circle with such elan. Not much can be said about the authenticity of the script since it speaks the language of the betrayed Eduardo Saverin who contributed to Ben Mezrich when he wrote his book The Accidental Billionaires, upon which The Social Network was based instead of the betrayer Marc Zuckerberg.
We get immersed in Marc Zuckerberg’s eccentricties from the first scene of the film. We are also oriented to the fast paced heavy dialogue delivery of this film from its beginning. Jesse Eisenberg establishes his insecure, sometimes geeky, most times genius character whose fingers run on the key board as effortlessly and rhythmically as if he were playing a piano with absolute perfection. The director captures the contradiction of Zuckerberg’s character with such vividness and Eisenberg brings it to life. Here is a man who is so full of ego and narcissism that he would go to any extent to nurse his wounds even if it means blogging expletives on his ex who dumps him, yet he seems so benign. He is a mastermind that takes an idea and builds on it so ingeniously and gives the world something they cant de-addict themselves of, yet doesn’t want to cash in on it. But when he decides to cash in on it, then no one comes in his way. He would swear by his best friend but will stab him in the back in due course of time when he pulls a little thing on his ego, even if it’s inadvertently.
The Social Network is not a fable and it's best that it is not viewed from there. It is movie that brings to the table the cut throat competitive world of business, corroborates how a big business begins with a thought, depicts how egos when rubbed the wrong way can pave way for brilliance and disorientation, all at the same time. And after all the money and fame in the world, all that we look for is that one comforting human presence.
Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake are all fabulous in their roles. An absolutely brilliant film that deserves superlative commendation for its character portrayals and ability to dole out a message of sorts without being judgemental in the least.
