Ramayana The Epic, a 3D Animated adaptation of the Ramayana is Maya Entertainment’s first theatrical 3D CGI feature film. And even though India has dabbled with 3D earlier, the quality of CGI in this film is marvelous. The movie features voices of Manoj Bajpai as Rama, Juhi Chawla as Sita, Ashutosh Rana as Raavana, Mukesh Rishi as Hanuman. It has been directed by Chetan Desai and was in making for two and half years with a team of over 400 people. At 24 crores, the movie is one of India’s most ambitious 3D animated projects.
The movie encapsulates the entire epic with a crisp and taut narrative that helps skip huge chunks leaving us to relish only the highpoints. After all, fitting an entire epic into 3 hours of movie viewing isn’t child play. Considering an Avatar took 3 years to hit theatres and was conceived way back in 1994, Ramayana, The Epic is surely a winner all the way. The CGI is to die for and the movie manages to keep us glued till the very end. Also, this is a film that will have a very broad audience base and not one that is meant only for children.
Ramayana’s biggest strength lies in its attention to detail. Whether it is the arrow that pierces through tiny droplets of water to kill Bali or the depiction of Sursa with her many heads, the two and a half years taken to bring this mammoth cinematic dream to life seem very justified. The other noticeable thing about the film is the way in which it contemporizes the look and feel of its characters. All characters have six pack abs. Ram, Laxman or for that matter even Hanuman have perfectly well toned bodies. Gidh Raj Jatayu infact has an eight pack. Now, if all of them were for real, they would have surely had all our actors turn into monkeys copying their bodies and toiling for hours in the gym trying to get that perfectly sculpted body or going under the knife to get those perfectly chiseled features. Not only that, the Vanar Sena is surely a pack of fun people dancing and making merry in a very close to African dance and music style. Hmm, wonder if there was a message there. Well manicured hands and Angad’s spiky hairstyle are again things you can’t miss.
The few things that could bother some are Sita’s arrogance and somewhat trenchant tirade to Lakshman when Mareech takes Ram into the jungle in the disguise of a deer. This is a Sita who seems more modern day like and not the bechari your heart will dole out compassion for. Some may also feel that the epic has been trivialized in the some portions where Sugreev and Kishkindha are shown in the film. However, all said and done, if you like to treat yourself with some fantastic animation and CGI work, pack Ramayana in your schedule for this Dussehra weekend.
