We obviously don’t expect a candy floss romance from Nagesh Kukunoor. The maverick filmmaker lives upto the reputation of his past body of work and gives us a film about life, death and the time in between. Aashayein is a film about a terminally ill man who discovers life only in the last few days that he has left of it. The film sensitively deals with cancer and life inside a facility that houses terminally ill patients and how the most of life can be made even while it stands at the brink of its end.
John Abraham plays Rahul, a young man who is a compulsive gambler. Almost as soon as the movie opens, Rahul is told that he is suffering from lung cancer and has only three months to live. While his girlfriend wants to marry him, he gives everything up and goes to a facility for patients like him. What starts then is a tale of fulfilling long lost dreams, camaraderie and empathy.
The film has some very interesting camerawork and good performances. John Abraham and all supporting actors play their roles well. While we see John pretty much as the gelled hunk in the beginning, the transformation of his character is heart wrenching. His chemistry with the HIV positive patient Madhu is note worthy as are the parts where he gets to play Indiana Jones.
But if you were looking at watching something light hearted this weekend, then Aashaayein is certainly not the film for you. Also, we have seen some more moving films on illness and cancer earlier. From that point of view, Aashayein is just decent but that Kukunoor can do and has done better is certain.
