The apology is being seen as an attempt to reduce anger against the group.
In a surprising move, the Naxals have apologised for killing 15 civilians when they blew up a bus in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district on Monday.
A spokesman of the Maoists’ South Bastar committee delivered the apology to a local TV channel on Tuesday.
"We had only intended to kill the special police officers travelling on the bus," he said.
"We’ll meet relatives of the villagers we killed, and do whatever we can to arrange compensation for them," the spokesman added.
Public opinion has been turning against the Maoists over the past six months, ever since they have launched a wave of deadly attacks on villages and police camps.
