CWG: Not a good time to send couriers

Costlier and slower service? The Commonwealth Games have hampered the courier industry.

The ban on day-time entry of light commercial vehicles (LCV) in Delhi during the Commonwealth Games has affected parcel and cargo movement in the city and adjoining areas.

In view of the CWG, being held from Oct 3-14, transport vehicles have not been allowed to ply on the roads during the day. As a result, consumers will experience delay in getting parcels and may have to pay extra for cargo services.

"I do see an impact on the business. There will be a delay of 2-3 days in the turnaround time. To ease out the problem we have decided to keep our offices open during the night as well," DHL Express Head of Marketing Chandrashekhar Pitre said.

Another firm DTDC, is also operating at night only and has witnessed decreased cargo movements in the capital.

"Currently we are operating only between 10 pm to 8 am for moving any cargo within the city. Because of the change in timings the number of orders have gone down substantially," said an employee of DTDC's cargo service on condition of anonymity.

"We have also increased our tariffs ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 1,500 per vehicle," he added.

According to another executive of DTDC's courier service, who also requested not to be identified, parcels are reaching their final destinations with a delay of 2-3 days.

"Our customers are facing problems due to delay in surface transport specifically in North India," the DTDC executive added.

According to Pitre of DHL Express, Delhi and NCR account for about 15-20 per cent of the company's total turnover.

An official at Overnite Express also confirmed that there has been a disruption in the normal delivery schedules of parcels as bulk movement of items has been affected by the ban imposed on the movement of light commercial vehicles.
