Cold wave abates in N India

Minimum temperatures rose across North India today giving much needed respite to residents reeling under a severe cold wave. Delhiites woke up to a pleasant morning today after overnight rains lashed the capital with the minimum temperature settling at a comfortable 10.5 degree Celsius.

A cool breeze also blew across the city in the morning making Delhiites feel a bit of the chill but the clear skies and sun made it tolerable. The rain guages measured 4.2 mm till 8:30 AM. The showers started around 11 PM yesterday.

Today's minimum was three degree Celsius above normal and up from yesterday's 9.5 degrees. Yesterday, the maximum was recorded at 25.6 degrees Celsius.The rains were attributed to a western disturbance. In parts of Rajasthan the mercury continued to rise where the lowest temperature was recorded in Sawaimadhopur at 8 degrees Celsius.

Other places in the desert state recorded night temperatures in the range of 10.9 degrees Celsius to 19.4 degrees Celsius. The skies were cloudy and similar conditions will prevail for the next couple of days, according to the MeT department.

Residents of Punjab and Haryana got some respite from the bitter cold as the minimum temperatures in the two states rose following two days of heavy rains. Chandigarh, which received 12.8 mm of rains till this morning, recorded a minimum of 11.2 degree Celsius, five notches above normal, the Meteorological office said here.

Mercury rose in Punjab's Amritsar, Ludhiana and Patiala areas after the rains, where minimum temperatures settled at 10.4 degree Celsius, 10.7 degree Celsius and 10.7 degree Celsius, respectively.
